5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC and VERY QUIET...   February 11, 2007

"HONEYWELL: 18155 SilentComfort Air Purifier"

First off, I'd like to say that this is the only air purifier I've ever owned so I cannot compare it fairly to others so I won't even try. But I've read dozens of reviews about the Honeywell QuietCare 17000 and noticed the main complaint is that it's not really queit at all. Well...I hope this helps.

As far as the noise level goes this SilentComfort 18155 is very quiet on MED and LOW. On HIGH, right next to it, it's about as loud as our dishwasher about 30 feet away. So it's not bad at all. I can still hear the television and have normal conversations with the family without yelling.

I've done some of my own studies to see how well the dust is being pulled into the machine and can see there is dust building up in the pre-filter over time. It seems to work very well. I've also noticed a difference on how fresh the air smells. My sneezing is almost down to zero, when it's running, and that tells me it's really working.

It does NOT have an IONIZER which IS A GOOD THING in my opinion. I've learned that these ionizers omit ozone. Which inside the home this ozone builds up and can be very harmful to the lungs. I did NOT like the sound of that so I turned away from the "ionizer" models.

It is very sturdy, a little bulky, but not too heavy to put in other rooms from time to time when I feel the need to relocate it. It blows cold air, not like a fan and not too direct, at a 360 degree radius(it also pulls from every direction). The cold air will be nice in the summer but it's not so nice right now in the winter. I like to put it next to the bed and it can get a little chilly when my covers come off. It has a very comforting and relaxing white noise hum to it. The motor runs very soft and consistant. No rattling or buzzing of any kind. It seems very well built.

MY ONLY CONCERN is that the return/exhaust does NOT blow straight up. It blows outword on the top/sides and it pulls from the bottom. This may be a brilliant design or a serious flaw? I question...is it just filtering the same air over and over again or is it like a vortex that pulls the dust into it with the pushing air(kind of like a tornado)? In my studies I found that was a tough call for me to make. But it really does help with my allergies so I must conclude that it's working properly.

I ordered it directly from Amazon and it arrived in 4 days(that includes the weekend) and that was with the FREE SUPERSAVER SHIPPING. Amazon is always fantastic about that, so no complaints there.

OVERALL... I am very pleased, though it may be a little early to give a longevity review right now, the HoneyWell SilentComfort 18155 really seems to work great and I have no complaints. If anything faulty or negative develops I will amend it into this review accordingly.

2 THUMBS UP...and I breathe much easier now.

Great product. You can really feel (and breathe) the difference in the air when you turn this on in a closed room, although I use it with the door open, too. For allergies and asthma, with its HEPA filter system (doctors I've spoken to recommend HEPA as the best filtration system for these problems), it has made a big difference for me. I had an older model that made a louder, harsher noise. Even on high, the sound from this model is still balanced enough so that it does, as others have commented, create a pleasant white noise effect. Note that it is fairly large and heavy, so moving it around from room to room is not impossible but a bit of a hassle. I haven't yet had to clean/replace the filters, since it's still new. But I like that there is a filter indicator on the unit so I don't have to remember when to do it.

5 out of 5 stars Quiet, almost too quiet   April 28, 2008

I never appreciated this product as much as I did until I just went to change the pre-filter. After 6 months of almost constant use it had a thick buildup of dust all around it.

After purchasing this product I did notice the air in my apartment just seemed fresher, it did not seem as stuffy and cooking odors did not linger as long.

When I first purchased this Honeywell I turned it on the low setting and could barely hear it, which worried me because part of the reason I bought it was for white noise at night. On the high setting it is loud enough to provide enough white noise.

In the six months of owning it has been very dependable and easy to use. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars If you want "SILENT" and "EFFECTIVE" Air Purifier L00K Here!   May 1, 2009

Folks, don't waste your time with those Ionizers that I found can actually worsen allergy symptoms by releasing the chemical ozone. I do my research & this baby went straight into my bedroom. I was and still am amazed at how quiet this thing is. Imagine the sound of air coming from the central air vents in your house & thats about how loud it is. Not very. And I don't see the amount of dust floating through the air anymore. Just keep your bedroom door closed as much as possible & let this beauty run on high all the time. DONE!

5 out of 5 stars Quietly controls odors and allergens.   May 13, 2008

Two cats and two smokers produce odors which are pretty awful. When combined, they become a force to be reckoned with.

After trying the ionizer route and finding they make the air sort of perky but still full of odors, I went with a HEPA filter that used a carbon pre-filter to help control both allergens and odors. The Silent Comfort works, but the label is a bit misleading as the unit isn't silent nor a recliner. Anyhow, the breakdown:

+ When the cats do their business, I don't know even if the unit is on low.
+ Air circulation improved which in turn reduced heating/cooling efforts.
+ Cigarette smoke visibly gets sucked into the unit, odor is gone within an hour on all settings.
+ Very easy to setup out of the box though Honeywell could splurge a bit on a maintenance guide.
+ Extremely quiet, though still audible, on low.
+ Quite and audible on medium.

- I suspect that the machine is going to nag me to clean the filters despite the claim for "normal" use which no doubt expects laboratory style clean-rooms are a good template.
- On high the unit is loud, not so loud you can't endure it but you can hear it from about 50' away with the door closed.

Conclusion: The negatives aren't a big deal, nor the slightly mischaracterized notion of "silent" and "comfort", so it's an easy 5/5.
